Facebook and Groups
Even though I already had an account on Facebook I have to admit that I rarely use it. I’ve initially created it because a friend wanted me to look some pictures. My friends are somehow addictive with Facebook, but they still didn’t pursue me to use it regularly. What I afraid most is the whole privacy story, who has access to our profiles and how can effect our future lives. ( a girl lost her job because she said something in her Facebook account- was in the news recently).
Searching for groups was quite interesting. I searched for a lot of things that I find relevant to me.
I’m interested about the use of blogs in education. So I was glad to find a group which is called : “Shift Happens: The Movement to Bring Education Into the 21st Century's Wall”, Which is a rather catching title. The group has 947 members. In the description of the group it says: “How many of us have ever seen a class on effective web searching? How many of our teachers even know what blogs are? How many times have we been told that Wikipedia is not a source, because "anyone can edit it"? I found it very relevant to our class and our discussions so I joined this group. In this group there are students as well as teachers and I guess everyone who has an interest on emerging technologies. I am interested in blogs and how we can use them as an educational tool so I made a question regarding this. And in a few hours somebody replied. I was excited to see that because I never thought that I would have an answer to this question from a group in the internet. There are no many posts even there a lot of people in the group but they all talk about innovative ways for teaching.
The other group that I joined is called “Konstantinos Kavafis” who is one of my favourite poets. This group has 7,619 fans and to my surprise there are many people who are not Greeks. In the discussion board you don’t see a ‘dialog’ but people write verses from their favourite poem. I found this quite nice because you can see that poetry spreads out through internet and maybe this will affect students to be more interested in poetry and literature.
I guess Facebook can be an educational tool as well as entertaining. This of course depends of the user and his needs and interests. It has aspects that can be exploited for educational purposes. The important thing is for people to know that…
